Complementing Your Hairstyle with Your Glasses

So, you just bought a fabulous pair of eyeglasses. They look great with your face shape, coloring and style. The only problem is your hairstyle isn’t going well with the new frames.

Here are some tips on matching your hairstyle to your glasses.

As a glasses wearer, you already know how difficult it is maintaining a fabulous hairdo if you have to constantly take your glasses on and off. This messes up the ‘do you spent so much time perfecting. Go for a hairstyle that keeps the hair away from your glasses, this will help the strands stay put.

Keep your bangs trimmed often, as they may interfere with your glasses and can look unkept if left too long. Bangs look great with light frames, so avoid large glasses, or frames that are too thick and heavy if you have bangs.

Color

If you normally keep your hair the same color, select a frame that will match your hair color, or complement it. Brown hair looks great with metal or dark frames. Blonde hair looks good with transparent or very light frames. Redheads look good in just about any color except white or yellow.

Style

When styling your hair for glasses, make sure the hairdo is in balance with the frame. When wearing a style that pulls your hair away from your face (i.e ponytail or bun), remember that your face will get extra focus with your glasses on. Your glasses can be used to either draw attention to your hairstyle, or to divert that attention.

Your glasses should accent your hairstyle and the frame should match the strongest element of your style.
If you want the best style to show off your fabulous frame, try a short hairstyle.
Almost any style that pulls the hair off of your face will look good with any frame.
A side-part looks great with square-shaped glasses.

Match your frame to your hairstyle

For wide frames, avoid hairstyles with lots of volume on the sides. Try hairstyles with a bit of height on the top. Chunky, textured bangs, long end lengths with no volume and short style with strong vertical lines also work well with square frames.

When wearing large frames, avoid long hairstyles with no volume, straight styles, or short pixie cuts. Styles that look best with large frames are proportion hairstyles and long, layered styles with volume on the sides.

With small frames, it is best to avoid styles that box in the face. Short, cropped styles with some wave highlight the face, showing off your frames.

Recycling Old Eyeglasses

Instead of tossing your old frames, why not give them to someone in need? The Lions Club will accept your used eyeglasses and will give them to someone who needs them to see better.

Matching Frames to Face Shape

There are three things you should consider when choosing a frame for the shape of your face, according to The Vision Council:

1. Eyewear should repeat your best feature.

2. The shape of the frame should contrast with the shape of your face.

3. The size of the frame should be in scale with the size of your face.

Although most faces are a combination of different shapes and angles, there are seven basic face shapes: round, oval, oblong, base-down triangle, base-up triangle, diamond and square.

Round
A round face has curved lines and the width and length have the same proportions. Since there are no angles in a round face to make it appear to be thinner and longer, an angular narrow eyeglass frame would lengthen the face, a clear bridge will widen the eyes. For a round face frames that are wider than they are deep would complement the face and a rectangular shape will make the face look longer.

Oval
An oval face is considered to be the ideal shape because it has balanced proportions. To keep the natural balance of an oval face, frames as wide as the broadest part of the face will compliment the shape of the face. A walnut shaped frame that is not too deep or too narrow will also compliment an oval face.

Oblong
An oblong face is longer than it is wide and has a long straight cheek. To make this face shape appear shorter and look more balanced, frames that have more depth compliment the face shape. Also decorative or contrasting temples that add width to the face make the face not look as long. A low bridge can shorten the nose.

Base-Down Triangle
This face shape has a narrow forehead and widens at the cheek and chin areas. To add width and emphasize the narrow part of the face, frames that are heavily accented with color and detailing on the top half of the face complement the shape. Frames with cat-eye shapes work best for this face shape.

Base-Up Triangle
This shape has a wide top third and a small bottom third. To minimize the width of the top of the face frame that are wider at the bottom complement this face shape. Light colors and materials also work well for this shape as well as rimless styles.

Diamond
Diamond faces are narrow at the eye line and jawline. This face shape also has broad cheekbones which may be high and dramatic. This face shape is very rare. To highlight the eyes and soften the cheekbones frames that have detailing or distinctive brow lines compliment this face shape. Rimless frame or oval and cat-eye shapes will work best for a diamond face shape.

Square
A square face has a strong jaw line and a broad forehead. The width and length of this face shape are in the same proportions. To make a square face appear longer and soften the angles, a narrow frame style which has more width than depth will compliment this face shape. Narrow oval shapes soften the angles and make the face appear longer.

Computer Glasses – Fact or Fiction?

Computer glasses differ from regular or reading glasses. They are specially-designed eyeglasses that for use when using a computer for a long period of time. The distance to a computer monitor is farther than that of reading material, so reading glasses ,or bifocals are not suitable for this activity. With bifocals, the wearer has to tilt their head back and look in a downward motion, which can cause neck, shoulder and back pain.
Computer glasses are typically single-vision. They offer the clearest vision for the optical distance between the computer screen and the wearer’s eyes. Unfortunately, reading material and objects farther away than the computer screen will appear blurry to the wearer.
Bifocal computer glasses can be prescribed where the upper part of the lens is adjusted for clear vision on the computer screen, while the lower segment is adjusted to reading materials at a close distance. These lenses also cause objects farther away to appear blurry.

While there is no perfect pair of computer glasses, the right pair will significantly reduce eye strain and fatigue. Be sure to get frequent eye exams and talk with your eye doctor about your computer use. With all the funky, fashionable frame styles now available, why not pick out a style you wouldn’t normally choose for your computer glasses?
